This spring has already proven to be miraculous with the healthy birth of the twins! We are very anxious to see what else is in store for us this year.
We get a bit fanatical about watching our girls at foaling time, and with the help of a camera system in the barn and testing the mares milk nightly we have been lucky to catch every birth in the past few years. Lacey was a maiden mare, this was our first foal from our colt Tequila, and we *really* wanted to be there for the birth.
Lacey however seemed to have other plans. We took turns staying up night after night watching her and at 2:30 AM on April 1st was rewarded to go see the birth of her filly "Diamond". Cute little palomino filly - and while we were taking care of mom and baby and waiting for the placenta to pass- doing the 'happy dance' because the birth had gone well - we turned and saw another pair of feet coming out of mom!
Bit of panic ensued. This was *not* supposed to happen! We have always purchased breedings until this year so the breeding of the mares was a very structured process. Ultrasounds had always been done prior to breeding to determine when the optimal time to breed would be, and follow up to verify the mare was in foal. This was the first time we had used our own stallion and let nature take its course. Suffice it to say - it will also be the last!
The twins are adorable but we do not forget for a minute how lucky we are to have come through this with three healthy animals. The odds are really against it coming out well and we are extremely grateful that all has gone well.
"Lil Bit" (or Miss Lucky) and Diamond are both healthy and full of themselves! Diamond is extremely athletic and quick.
Unfortunately we cannot keep all of them... and have decided to put the twins up for sale. Diamond is anticipated to make a full size horse - I expect her to fniish about 14.2-14.3. "Lil Bit" I expect to stay pony sized. Both will be registered as breeding stock paints and will also be eligible for the Palomino horse registry. While we would love to see them stay together we recognize that may not happen. Babies are weaned and leading well at this point. $500 for Diamond - $250 for "Lil Bit" or someone wanting both can have them for $650 for the pair.
